Out with a whimper

As it turns out, last night was likely the last Use It or Lose It ride for the year. One rider showed up (a 100% improvement over last week’s zero!), so we donned our warm woolies and did the traditional Green River/Interurban Trails loop for 20 miles.

It’s a bit sad, since last year the turnout was pretty consistent, and the rides ran through March. This year was a different story. Fewer ride leaders to help out, combined with low turnout has dictated at least a pause in the regular schedule. No rides are scheduled for February. If I were to list any for March, I’d have to commit to that in the next week, and that seems unlikely.

I’ve sent my summer bike (the Lemond) on vacation to California. I’ve been getting postcards from it as it makes it’s way to Palm Springs (via email, courtesy DHL couriers). I’ll arrive at the hotel one week from tonight and in theory my trusty steed will be waiting there for me, ready to be re-assembled and ridden in the Tour de Palm Springs on the 9th. It was a cheaper alternative, and far less hassle than trying to take it on the plane, then schlepping it in and out of a rental car. I don’t have the logistics worked out yet for shipping it back home, but I’m sure it will be relatively painless. Having the shipping company pick up the bike at the hotel for the return journey is likely a problem that can be easily fixed by using my checkbook as a lubricant.

Given the travel schedule, I will only attend 2 of the remaining 3 HIT sessions. I felt seriously depleted the last couple of road rides, which I attribute to the drain of HIT. Hopefully a week off will be sufficient to recharge the legs in time for a century attempt on the 9th. With the 20 miles last night, my January total mileage will likely be less than I did in the average January week last year. I’m sure I’ll make up for it, I’m just not sure when.
