Getting Ready for RAW
The Ride Around Washington (RAW) begins next weekend, and I am getting excited. This will be my first foray into multi-day-camping-and-cycling. The long-range weather forecasts look pretty positive so far, so I should end up with a cycling-tan to be proud of.

With the assistance of RAW veteran Jim Carson, I’ve now got my packing list completed. We’re allowed two duffel bags @ 35 pounds each, plus a folding chair. Therefore:
Duffel #1:
- tent with rain fly
- sleeping bag
- self-inflating pad
- towel
- laundry detergent
- spare tubes
- clothes pins
- drink mix
Duffel #2:
- toiletry kit
- clothes
- travel pillows
- books
- chargers for cell phone and camera
- lights for night-reading
Handlebar Bag:
- cell phone
- camera
- drink mix for the day
- first aid kit
- sunscreen
Folding lawn chair
Although Terri is not looking forward to having me gone for a week, she’s being a real sport about helping me get prepped for this trip. She’s treating it like “sending me off to Bike Camp”.
I have done only 160 miles or so since STP, but I’m feeling pretty good about this upcoming ride, and I’m sure I’ll get through in fine form.
3,126 miles ytd.

Good luck on the RAW ride, I am confident you will do well.
Thanks again for leading a fun ride on Saturday, even though IT RAINED.
As a wise man almost said once…”It’s only rain, it won’t hurt you. Just ride through it.”

I did RAW a few years ago. It was great! We rode basically from Spokane to Arlington – going over five 5,000 foot passes. It’s amazing what you can do when you think you are already tired.
