First Fall
Actually, it is the first bike fall that I can remember. Ever.
I was just remarking to someone last week that I had been very lucky in my childhood. I had ridden a Schwinn Varsity 10-speed road bike, while all my friends rode Sting-rays. Much of our group activities ended up involving, for at least some distance, trail riding. Whatever I learned doing trail riding on a 10-speed at age 13 had done me in good stead in my adult years. I’ve been blessed with very good bike handling, and have been able to stay upright when no one I was riding with figured I would.
Well, I was riding solo tonight. First ride since STP. Did a little loop in the valley, hitting a window of no-rain on an otherwise drizzly day. On a blind yet benign corner, my rear wheel slipped out from under me at a relatively low speed and I hit left knee, hip, elbow, and palm. Palm was gloved, it’s ok. Elbow was slightly abraded, minor. It looks like my knee hit first, and is damaged the worst. I think the damage is superficial, as walking around tonight did not cause me undue discomfort, but we’ll see tomorrow. I’ve got a pretty good picture of my hip as well, but I don’t think we know each other well enough yet.
Beyond the usual “will I ever play the violin again?” kind of thought (no, I don’t), my very next thought was of you, dear reader. “Crap, I don’t have a camera!”. So, with one brake lever at about 1:30 rather than 12:00, I jumped back on the bike and pedaled my ass back to the car, loaded the bike, drove home, and got out the dang camera. The trail debris is still stuck to my shin, as I didn’t want to brush it off so that you would not get the full effect. The mindset of a blogger, for sure.

Wow – usually my second thought is about the health of the bike and bending the contacted brake lever back to the 12:15 position so I can get wherever it is I wanted to go.
The hip wound is the one that seems to hurt the most.

Yowser! You may be feeling okay now, but that sucker’s going to hurt tomorrow. Also, I love the blogger mentality of needing pictures and documentation!
It sounds like you did the same thing to your brake lever as I did in my fall. I remedied it by laying the bike on the ground, putting my foot on the lever, then pulling up on the bike until all was as Edouardo Bianchi intended it. A bit unorthodox, but I had tried everything else, and didn’t relish having to take apart the whole set-up. Actually, I was a bit impressed with how well it worked.
Take good care of yourself, Sir, and keep that rash moistened and covered for a few days. I hope you’re better soon!

Ouch! I’ve got lots of battle scars from my bike, mostly from problems clipping out when I first starting riding!

Glad to hear you aren’t hurt. Are you going to start shaving your legs now to take care of your battle wounds?
