Cranking it up…
I have been less than productive with my cycling miles over the last couple of weeks, 83 miles spread over 4 dates. We’ve had a lot of other obligations to see to, but now it is time to step up the miles in preparation for the July 14 Seattle-to-Portland Classic. Kevin and I will be doing the 200 miles in 1 day (my second time, his first STP).
Tomorrow is a “dry-run” (if the weather cooperates) for STP. I’ll be leaving the house at an ungodly hour and head south along the STP route. On STP day I’ll actually head north first, meet Kevin between Auburn and Seattle somewhere, then turn south in order to have “full mileage” for the day. I’m not bothering with that tomorrow, as (a) I’ve ridden that route so many times that I have every crack in the pavement memorized, and (b) my riding partner du jour Donna would have proof positive that I’m a nut job. Therefore, I’ll save the up-and-back for July, and we will just roll down off Meredith Hill and hang a right. Kevin has chosen to ride the Flying Wheels Summer Century, an event that does not even remotely tempt your’s truly due to the crowds and the drive-time to the start.
My goal for Saturday is 120 miles. I’m hoping the weather cooperates and we don’t get pouring rain. For once the forecasts of both WeatherUnderground.com and Weather.com appear to be in sync, predicting 30% chance of some showers. The forecast is even slightly more rosy for Yelm, close to our turn-around point. If we get sprinkles, I won’t mind. I’m not bringing a lot of rain gear, however, so if it really starts pouring I’m pulling in to the nearest establishment serving a decent microbrew, and calling for the SAG wagon.
2,290 miles year-to-date
And in the strange news category:
If this truck had collided with a tanker carrying 350 degree vegetable oil, I’d be heading up to Snoqualmie Pass right about now.

I heartily agree with you about Flying Wheels. The route’s kinda sorta in my stomping grounds, but the crowds make it unappealing. (When I last rode it in 2005, there was at least one fatality. *On a recreational ride!*)
Have a good go at it tomorrow!

O, sweet Jeebus! A fatality on the Flying Wheels? It nauseates me thinking about it.
Good luck with the 120 miles, John. Don’t worry about friends thinking you’re crazy. They already know!
