Milestones, or I can’t just leave it alone.
It was spitting a few raindrops in my general direction on Thursday evening as I loaded up the bicycle for my drive to Mountain Bike Outfitters, and Use It or Lose It. The precipitation ceased by ride-time, and 4 of us had a lovely relaxed ride north through the valley. At one point we were escorted by a low-flying owl. We were riding along the Green River, and we watched him flying just below eye-level over the water, cruising easily on his 3 foot wingspan. It was a lovely 20.1 mile ride. My new wheels were feeling nice and solid and round, and although I was fatigued from having ridden or done spin class every day since Saturday, I felt pretty good in the saddle on this night.
This was to be my last ride of the month. This weekend Terri and I are kicking off the celebration of our 20th anniversary with a little trip up to Vancouver B.C. to mark the occasion. Tuesday next will be the actual date, and I will skip Use It or Lose It in order to do the romantic dinner thing.
As usual, I come home from my ride and sit down at this computer in order to enter my mileage in my “saddle log”. I punched in my 20.1 miles and glanced at the monthly total, which was to be my final total for January, 2007.
192.62
Gee, nice total John. But, hey, dude… Pssssssssst. You are less than 8 miles away from 200.
It’s actually o.k. I tell myself. After all, last year I did over 4,000 miles after only 88 miles in January.
But, my nature being what it is, that 8 miles is going to be running around in the back of my mind all weekend. Wadaya bet I try to sneak out Monday at lunch for a quick spin? Intellectually I know it’s silly, and that 8 miles doesn’t mean a lot in the greater scheme of things, but I will undoubtedly try to find a way to get them in. 200 is just too juicy a milestone to pass up, much line 4,000 was when I had 3,400 or so last September.

Congratulations on the upcoming anniversary, John (and Terri!). I’m glad to hear you’ll be out enjoying it.
Also, I’d try and cram in the 8 miles, too.
