Big Ride – Pacific Coast

Two folks I know are pursuing a goal of riding the Pacific Coast from Seattle to San Francisco, California. Talk about a dream ride! Other than having the luxury of time to ride clear across the country, this trip (with a likely extension to Southern California) would rank high on my list of rides-to-do.

The twist is that these riders are doing this ride as a fundraising activity, to benefit the American Lung Association of Washington. If they raise funds up to a certain threshold, they can go on this supported ride of 960 miles in 15 days. To me this is a real win-win situation, and I am proud to say that I am making my own humble donation to their goal. I would encourage you to do the same.

Jeff Silbaugh is a recent acquaintance that I met on the Cascade Training Series. Jeff is one of the Cascade Ride Leaders, and pulled in to help me with a flat-tire saga on the May 13th version of CTS. Jeff’s a very nice guy and an asset to any group ride because of his knowledge and generosity.
Courtney Searls-Ridge is also a fellow Cascade ride leader, whom I met on one of the Newcomer’s rides that I have led. Courtney is motivated to raise funds for the Lung Association because of the 25 years she spent smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day. She was able to quit in 1983. As she says on her pledge site:

I am participating in this ride to celebrate my good health as I turn 60 and to raise $3,000 for the continued work of the American Lung Association of Washington.

Please join me in sponsoring these two great individuals and a great cause.

  1. I’ve wanted to do the Big Ride now for a number of years. My aunt has suffered from emphysema for years now; my father-in-law lost a portion of his lung due to cancer. Tobacco use is such a tragedy!

This ride is always very close to the Jewish High Holydays, though. I’d have to pick the year I do this ride very carefully. But it’s on my list of 43 things. http://www.43things.com/things/view/723291
